PREGNANCY

Many women think bearing will spoil their figures and they'll never regain the kind of shape they had before. But being pregnant could be turned to your advantage. If you are a little overweight, have got out of condition and into bad eating habits, then pregnancy is the ideal time to start exercising and balancing your weight through a more healthy eating pattern.

Obviously the strain of carring a baby puts a lot of pressure on the abdominal muscles, spine and pelvic floor. It makes sense to be in good shape before pregnancy and to strengthen the abdominal muscles in particular.

If you try to get into good shape before you become pregnant you will find it much easier to regain your former shape or even attain a better one afterwards.

Swimming is an excellent exercise for women during pregnancy. Despite the extra pounds of pregnancy, the mother feels weightless while in the water, making it easier to exercise. The use of the large muscles of the upper and lower body during aerobic water activity increases the mother's ability to utilize oxygen, a benefit for both the mother and the baby. The water will also reduce the stress on the joints and the risk of injury from loss of balance.

Swimming on a regular basis during pregnancy improves circulation, muscular strength, muscular endurance, sleep, and caloric metabolism. It's important to have the approval of a physician or midwife before taking part in any individual swimming, group swimming, or water aerobic class.

Another good reason for being in good condition before pregnancy is the fact that your legs will have to carry around so much more weight. For this reason, strong, healthy leg muscles will prove an asset. They'll improve circulation and fight against varicose veins. If you are supple around the hip and pelvic aera, then this has to make the actual birth of the child so much easier.

After the birth, restoring your hard-worked body to good condition through sensible exercise is vital and may even hellp prevent problems with the pelvic floor in later life.

Always check with your doctor if you intend to exercise both before and after the birth to be sure that you are in good enough physical condition to be exercising.
